Omegas: How to Get More of The Good Fats

Omegas: How to Get More of The Good Fats

When people hear the word “fats,” they tend to run right in the other direction. However, we tend to call back to them “but what about the good fats?!” Omegas, in fact, are just one of the important “good fats” your body needs to stay healthy!

The most popular of these are Omega-3 essential fatty acids: eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA are so important, in fact, that in 2004 the Food and Drug Association (FDA) stated that “supportive but not conclusive research shows that consumption of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.”

So for those looking for nourishing cardiovascular support, in addition to an impressive list of other health benefits including immune, cognitive, and joint support, omega-3 essential fatty acids are a key addition to your diet!* But how can you bump your intake of these good fats?

The easiest way is through a diet rich in… fish! The majority of omega-3 sources are right from fish (notably from krill, salmon, and cod), however many people do not eat nearly enough fish on a daily basis to meet the recommended daily allowance (RDA) of omega-3 oils from this one source alone.

Where does that leave the rest of us? In comes Fish Oil Supplements! These supplements such as the variety offered by Bronson deliver health-supportive omega-3 essential fatty acids EPA and DHA in a convenient (and fishy taste-free!) form that can be easily added to your daily regimen.

Of course there’s also those who are looking for a source of omega-3 that can be found growing on land rather than swimming in the sea. Plant sources of omega-3 essential fatty acids include Flax Seed Oil and Pumpkin Seed Oil, both of which are available in supplements to help balance the lack of flaxseeds or pumpkin seeds in your pantry (though if you do have those, try throwing them into your next smoothie or sprinkling them on a salad or yogurt!).

So next time you hear “rich in fat,” don’t immediately turn away - think of the good fats! Omega-3 essential fatty acids are an important part of any healthy diet, and there are plenty of ways to get EPA and DHA in your daily menu with the growing options of supplements available to boost your healthy lifestyle.
